Our Founder and CEO, Dr. Thandi Ngcobo, recently joined Njabs Zwane on #TheLiftOff on #GagasiFM

While many associate aviation with piloting or being a flight attendant, Dr Ngcobo highlights the industry’s wide range of career pathways. “Engineering comes first – we need mechanics to maintain planes, IT experts, and even air traffic controllers to ensure smooth take-offs and landings,” she notes.

She emphasised the critical role of strong academics in high school for anyone aspiring to enter the aviation industry. Subjects such as Pure Mathematics are often overlooked, yet they are essential for meeting entry requirements and succeeding in aviation studies. Recognising this gap, Fuze Aviation Academy has introduced a forward-thinking cadet programme designed specifically for Grade 10 learners. The programme ensures students take the right subject combination early on, positioning them to transition seamlessly into aviation studies after Grade 12.

What sets the academy apart is its early exposure to flight training. Learners begin working towards their PPL (Private Pilot Licence) while still in high school, meaning that by their final year, they already hold a licence that strengthens and anchors their future aviation journey.

Soaring to New Heights: How South Africa is Leading the Way for Women in Aviation

South Africa is currently flying high on the global stage, ranking third in the world for its percentage of female pilots. With women making up nearly 10% of the country’s pilot population, South Africa sits impressively above the global average of around 5%, trailing only behind India and Ireland. While this statistic is a powerful testament to the strides being made in a traditionally male-dominated industry, the journey toward true representation is far from over. The sector is still hungry for transformation, and organisations like Fuze Aviation Academy are stepping up to ensure that the future of aviation is both diverse and inclusive.

At the forefront of this movement is Dr. Thandi Ngcobo, a medical doctor turned aviation pioneer who founded Fuze Aviation Academy to change the face of the industry.

Under her leadership, the academy has already made history as the first black-owned company to win an award at the Aero Club of South Africa Annual Awards. Fuze is not just training adults; they are planting seeds for the future with the launch of a dedicated aviation high school, set to welcome Grade 8 and 9 learners in 2026 . By catching talent early and providing a clear pathway from the classroom to the cockpit, Fuze is actively dismantling the barriers that have historically kept women and marginalised groups grounded.

If you want to be part of this exciting evolution, there has never been a better time to get involved. You can hear more about this inspiring journey directly from Dr. Ngcobo in her recent interview on SABC’s “Asikhulume, Let’s Talk,” where she discusses the grit and rewards of breaking into the aviation sector.

Whether you are a parent looking for a unique education for your child or an aspiring pilot ready to earn your wings, Fuze Aviation Academy is ready to help you take flight. Visit their website today to apply for the academy or the new high school intake.

Shaping the Future of Aviation in South Africa

South Africa’s aviation industry stands at a critical point of growth and transformation. As global demand for pilots continues to rise, the need for well-prepared, highly skilled aviation professionals has never been greater. Fuze Aviation Academy is responding to this demand by building a strong pipeline of future aviators, starting at high school level.

Under the leadership of Founder and CEO Dr Thandi Ngcobo, Fuze is actively creating opportunities for young women to pursue aviation careers, helping to redefine what leadership in the skies looks like for South Africa and the continent. Beyond technical excellence, Fuze Aviation Academy is also intentionally contributing to transformation within the industry, particularly by increasing female representation in the cockpit.

Globally, women account for only a small percentage of airline pilots, and similar disparities exist across Africa. To learn more about the vision behind Fuze Aviation Academy and its mission to shape the next generation of pilots, watch the full interview with Dr Thandi Ngcobo on Ukhozi FM above.

Applications for both the academy and high school are now open. Begin your journey toward a career in aviation today.
